One of the most essential components of life is sleeping. There has been an estimation of 26 years wherein a single person will be spending his/her time sleeping. Having a sleep for less than 6 hours a day can pose some risks to one’s health especially if it happens often. People over the age of 45 who got less than 6 hours of sleep at night have twice the chance of having a heart attack or stroke. If neglected and left untreated, it may lead to heart failure. Doctors do advice their patients to always have at least 6-8 hours of sleep at night. However, this required time for sleep cannot be easily achieved for people suffering from different kinds of sleep disorders.
One of these disorders happens during the Rapid Eye Movement (REM) stage. It is called parasomnia. In this case, active behavior and nightmares may be present during dreaming. This is a category of sleep disorder which involves behaviors, emotions, abnormal movements and perceptions on different sleep patterns. It is also characterized by the loss of the ability of the muscle to relax during REM sleep. Cannabidiols have anxiolytic, anticonvulsant and sedative effect. It somehow has the capacity to control these symptoms as it directly affects the CB1 receptors in the brain, an important receptor that is responsible for multiple actions of the central nervous system.
A study was once conducted on rats measuring the effectivity on their sleep-wake cycle. The same drug was administered to the subjects systematically through the intracerebroventricular(ICV) site. Two groups of rats were injected with different amount. One group was treated with an amount of 10mg/kg and the other with 40mg/kg. In this study, the subjects injected with 40mg/kg of the aforementioned compound appeared to have an increase in total sleep time compared to the other group. Blood tests taken from the rats during their sleep have shown that it has affected the level of dopamine in the bloodstream. It then resulted to more relaxed and better sleep.

In sleep disruption, the same cannabis component through its anxiolytic effect, blocks the anxiety-induced REM sleep, making a person suffering from this disorder to have a longer sleep. Moreover, this is a non-psychotopic component of the cannabis.
People who are suffering from insomnia, which is the difficulty of falling or staying asleep, have reported to have better sleep once they have started to take the aforementioned drug before going to sleep. It has also been studied that, through the endocannabinoid system, it activates receptors which are similar with the ones affecting the adenosine gland.
